Top views of each condition show that, compared to controls, the simulation of a cylinder (see Figure 1) is compelling enough to spatially confine flies within a small portion of the physical arena. A) The virtual reality simulated cylinder condition. Individual trajectories are confined within the simulated cylinder (left), and the probability of fly location is concentrated within this area (right). B) In this condition, the initial frame of the virtual reality simulated cylinder was given, but instead of updating the display to account for fly movement, the stimulus remained constant. C) No stimulus was given, showing the background pattern of fly trajectories and their distribution without the simulated cylinder. Red square indicates initial trigger volume and black circle illustrates simulated cylinder position. N=27 for each condition.
